How to open the Blüm tin

a step by step guide

Why is the Blüm Tin child-resistant?

At Blüm, we prioritise safety, especially when it comes to products that may be stored in environments with children.

The tin’s child-resistant design is a key feature that helps prevent the medication getting into the wrong hands.
The two release points on either side of the tin require hand coordination and pressure that most children won’t be able to apply, providing an extra layer of protection.

Step by Step guide

step 01

Identify the release points

The Blüm tin hinges at the top, but it is secured on the sides by two small release buttons. Patients can find these buttons on either side of the tin, about halfway down.

step 02

Squeeze the buttons

The Blüm tin is secured with a small paper seal that must be broken before opening. Using their thumb and index finger, patients should press both release points at the same time. Both buttons need to be pressed simultaneously for the lid to open. Applying pressure to only one side won’t release the lid.

Tip
If one of the buttons feels stiff, instruct patients to try squeezing it a little harder. They may also want to press each tab individually a couple of times to loosen them up before attempting to open the tin.

step 03

Lift the lid

With both release points squeezed, patients can then gently lift the lid from the bottom of the tin. The hinge at the top will allow it to open smoothly.

Tip
If the lid still feels stuck, check that patients are squeezing the release points evenly and firmly. If it’s their first time opening the tin, it may require a bit of extra force, but it will loosen with use.

step 04

Close the lid

To close the tin, patients should make sure the clamshell tag inside the tin is pointed upwards, facing the top of the tin. Then they should press down gently until they hear a soft click.

Tip
If the tag is pointing downwards, it may cause the tin to get stuck, so advise patients to double-check the orientation before pressing down.

troubleshooting

What to do if the tin is hard to open

Because the Blüm tin is built to be child-resistant, the locking mechanism can sometimes feel stiff or stuck. If patients are finding it hard to open, here are a few things they can try:

  • Apply More Pressure: Ensure they're pressing both release points with enough force. The mechanism requires firm pressure, which is part of the child-resistant design.

  • Loosen the Mechanism: If they notice that one side of the tin feels particularly stiff or jams, try pressing that side’s release point a few times before attempting to open it again. This can help free up the mechanism.

  • Grip the Tin Firmly: Advise patients to hold the tin securely while applying pressure to the release points. This will make it easier to control the movement and open the lid.

  • Check Your Hand Position: Make sure they're squeezing the buttons from the sides, using their thumb and index finger for maximum leverage. Holding it from different angles can make opening more difficult.

Safety tip

Keep out of reach of children

While the Blüm tin is designed to be child-resistant, remind patients that they should still store it out of the reach of children. Safety features provide extra protection but should never replace responsible storage practices.
